Getting the Perfect Pixie

It seems that pixie cuts have been named the new "it" haircut. Well, at least according to several magazines, including Teen Vogue. This year, we've seen an increase in the celebrities with chopped-off hair (see Natalie Portman above center), and models like Agnes Deyn (above right) have also increased in popularity. For as long as I can remember, I've admired pixie cuts. There's something so chic about them. There's always the worry that a "boy haircut" will make you look like...well...a boy, but I think in most cases a pixie cut makes its wearer look ultra-feminine by highlighting the girlish curves and features of their face. I was actually a little ahead of the loop on this trend (which makes me feel infinitely cool), because I chopped off my hair last year. I recently gave into my short hair attention span and started to grow it out, but this is what it looked like a year ago (excuse the odd, gloomy expression):

I really loved the cut. In fact, it was probably my favorite haircut I've ever had. And because of my short hair attention span, I've been changing my hairstlye about twice a year since I was 10, so I have a lot of haircuts to pick from. First of all, it was so easy. I went from being a girl who was attatched at the hip to a blowdryer to a girl who didn't touch one. In fact, I didn't even need a hairbrush. All I had to do was wet my hair (or wash it), decide whether or not I wanted to mess up my hair with gel, and go. Also, it added interest to my appearance. I didn't have to worry so much about whether my clothing looked to much like everyone else's on a lazy day, because my hair didn't look like anyone else's. And I think it looked good on me, which is always a plus.

A lot of people worry about getting such a short haircut, because it's so radically different from any style they've had before. What if it looks bad? What if it makes them look butch? What if their hair decides to curl wildly after being cut so short? Here are some tips for getting the perfect pixie.

1) People always give all these criteria for different haircuts, like only people with heart-shaped faces can get one cut, and people with oval faces should get another. I say, screw those criteria! I've never been able to figure out my face shape, and I don't think you can really fit a whole population into three or four different face shapes. People are too unique. If you want to know whether your face is suited to a pixie cut, then check to see if you're a Ponytail Girl. What is a Ponytail Girl? Well, I am, for starters. So are a lot of girls. A Ponytail Girl is a girl who looks best, or even just good, with her hair up. All you have to do to see if you are pixie cut material is to pull your hair up off your face in a ponytail (or a bun, if you wanna mix it up), and decide whether that looks good. Keep in mind that a pixie cut will not be as flat to your head as a ponytail, but your face will look basically the same in a pixie cut as it will in a ponytail.

2) Unfortunately, hair type must be taken into account. A lot of curly-haired girls look great with short hair, but if you have curly hair, you shouldn't expect your hair to look sleek in the way that most people picture pixie cuts. If your hair is straight, however, or mildly wavy, you're all set. Hair is funny, and it does different things for everyone. My hair is pretty wavy, but after I cut it short, it turned straight. Odd, right? I had expected it to turn curly, if anything. Part of this is luck. You have to hope that your hair will turn out the way you want it after being cut, and just take a risk. But if you're worried, there's a safer route. I'd suggest getting your hair cut semi-short, like maybe chin length, at first. If it is curlier at that length, then it will definitely be curly as a pixie. You can stop there if you don't want to go on. But if you do, try an even shorter (but not quite pixie length) haircut before you move on, or just go for the pixie.

3) Go to a good hairdresser! I can't stress the importance of this enough. If you usually go to a place like Super Cuts (I admit it, I usually do), then try to get a reccomendation from a friend, or even ask an employee at your haircutting place.

4) Be as specific as possible about what you want. If you just walk in and ask for a pixie cut, the hairdresser won't know what to do. There are many variations on the pixie cut. Try to find a picture of the haircut you want, and bring it in with you when you go. If you are still nervous about getting the cut, you can ask your expert hairdresser if they think a pixie will look good on you, but I find that hairdressers tend to shy away from giving their opinions because they worry you migth get mad at them if you don't like your haircut.

5) Go home and admire! Once your hair is all lovely and pixie-ish, it may take a few days to get used to. Play around with gels and things, mess it up, tease it, put in some hair clips, try on different outfits with it - have fun with your new look. I didn't like my cut right after I got it, but it turned out that I just hated the way my hairdresser styled it. It looked much better after I showered and hand-combed it. Also, remember that hair grows. If you've played around with your hair, and you still don't like it, don't panic. In about a month, if you let it grow, you'll be sporting a chic 20's-style bob. And the nice thing about short hair is that it can be easilly covered. If you hate it, although I doubt you will, hats and scarves will easily hide the evidence of your loathsome cut. Don't expect to hate it, though. Pixie cuts are great, and if you follow my tips, I think your cut will be a thing of beauty.

Happy hair-cutting!

My 16 yo just got her hair cut short and she really looks feminine and beautiful with it. (Your ponytail tip is great.) She made up her mind before doing it that she was going to start wearing makeup. The other thing she does is to use a pink bandana as a head band.

Great post!

Question, I have loose curls, how would the curls react to a pixie cut?

i really enjoyed this post! i just got a pixie cut as well ala miss aggy deyn (with slightly longer bangs), i think about a week ago, as i was so tired of my long hair. i definitely love the change and the freedom to play up my hair in any style! i must admit i felt a bit worried after i got it done mainly because of the length and how the hairdresser styled my hair, but loved it more after i had a shower and gelled it up to my taste.

i agree with you about if you're going to get a haircut from somewhere like supercuts it's best to get a recommendation from someone. i got my haircut at the toni & guy hair academy only after reading rave reviews about it, and i think the student who cut my hair did a great job (since he got constant supervision from the stylist). i would definitely go again!

I have ringlet curls and last year I sported a pixie cut, and it actually worked really well. Curly hair just gives it a bit of a wilder, less plastered look.

Thanks for the tips-
I've been considering cutting my hair short for a while now and I think I'm going for it. I was worried because I have a square(ish) face, but people still think it would look good on me. I'm glad someone else doesn't care about facial shapes either.

After seeing so many hairstyle websites telling me about round faces and diamond faces and square faces and trapezoid faces, it's really nice to see someone who doesn't care about it. I've been thinking about cutting my hair short, and I think I will, now. That ponytail tip is a very good idea.
...So now, I just need to find a good hairstylist... Huh.

Whew! I thought I was the only one that said screw face shapes. I could never quite figure out what mine was either and so I just went for the short cut at the beginning of this year. I moved, cut and dyed my hair, and changed my name. Sounds freaky but I wanted to try out a new style since I was being forced to move anyway. =p Back to the point, I found that I looked good and more importantly I have a tip:
If you do something weird, like dye hair hair crazy or shave it or something, people will always say "Wow, I could never pull that off, your so lucky that you can! Your face shape is perfect" or whatever bla bla bla. The point is, just do it, and show confidence in your new hairstyle and people will think you look good.
With all the experiments I have done, I have heard "wow you are the only one that could pull that off" way to many times. And I know that it is not true. All you need to pull something off is confidence in it.

You and me both! I also chopped my hair short on October of last year. I've never been much of a fashionista, but it definitly gave me an ego boost. Now if only my hobo clothes would come back in style.

Long hair is just sexier, 99 times out of 100. Pixies are cute on some YOUNG women, almost never on chicks over 35.

This post originally inspired me to get my hair cut pixie-short. That was around two months ago; I've had it cut again once, and I'm already disenchanted. My hair has always grown fast, but within two or three weeks of it getting cut I had to gel the hell out of it in order for it to not look like a white-girl fro. It was starting to become a mullet before I cut it again, and now it's just not behaving.
I can do a faux hawk with it but even that requires a lot of patience and manicuring, and it doesn't weather well with my habit of petting my hair. I loved the pixie, it looked good on me for a little bit, but now I'm faced with the desire to grow it out and having no idea how. It's almost summer so I can hide the awkward phases with scarves and the like (it's not allowed around my gang-infested school), but for those who are considering cutting it all off, heed my warnings.

Right, I'm done. Sorry about the length of that. Just trying to spare some possible-pixie-chicks some frustration and money.

I've been wanting to cut my hair supershort for months now but kept putting it off. I seriously cannot figure out what my face shape is, and if the haircut doesnt turn out nicely, it won't kill me. Then I'll just have to look forward to growing my hair out again, unless it does turn out nice and I choose to keep it. Anyway people say I look better with my hair up, so I guess that's a good indication of how I'd look with pixie hair. So thanks = )

I intend to get a pixie cut this week. I AM a little scared as apparently I have a heart shaped face, whatever that means, but you know? I wear my hair in a ponytail 95% of the time-the only time I don't is when I'm sleeping or have a migraine-at least I try not to wear a ponytail when I have a migraine. I just can't stand hair in the face. I WANT a pixie cut like yours!

Anonymous said...

hey, this really helped me! about 2 years back i shaved my head for cancer, and never did anything with it. i had the occasional faux hawk, but other then that i just let it lay flat. I'm going in tomorrow to get a super short pixie, just so i can actually spike it again. i love playing with gel, because when you have long hair you cant do anything fun with it. everyone says i looked great with one, and i never was sure, but your article really helped! thanks!

I just stumbled across this doing a bit of research because I'm considering getting a pixie cut, something kind of spunky and spiky but could look nice and smooth when needed.
Your ponytail tip really helped! I always wear my hair up--in MY opinion, I look better with my hair up. And I'm glad that you think that face shape doesn't matter...because I have NO idea what the shape of my face is...and I think that a haircut like this will give me an ego-boost (I definitely need it--my self-esteem is almost through the floor).
Anyways, this really helped. Thanks so much, I wish I found this sooner!

I too found this site when doing research on my pixie- and my cut turned out great! I have naturally curly hair- I would consider it medium curly (ringlets and waves combined).
My cut is about 2 inches on top and one inch on the sides. She left one side a little longer and really layered so I can have two different looks depending on which side I sweep the hair towards. I also have "sideburns" that kind of curl into a half-moon shape. They are really cute. Right now I'm wearing it with the bangs swept to one side and everything else pushed forward, no part. It looks cute and artsy- not like a mom haircut!!! (That was one of my concerns!)
I would reccomend that you see a GOOD hairstylist. My salon makes every stylist go to NY for training all the time, plus all the stylists do fashion shows often so they know what is "in". This makes me really trust them!
They also stressed that face shape is important- they even said they don't recommend it if you aren't very attractive or if you have prominent features you want to downplay (like your nose or ears that stick out). Fortunately, I'm not butt-ugly, I have high cheekbones and normal sized features overall. The nice thing is that it really makes my eyes stand out- always a good thing!
Good luck with your haircut- you'll love your pixie!
P.S. My husband loves it! Good thing I didn't marry a guy with hang-ups about long hair or he'd be out of luck!

Thank you thank you thank you! I stumbled across your blog while looking for a cute pixie. I never really wanted short hair, but I made a VERY bad mistake! I let my friend cut my hair, and now it's about an inch long in the back and below my chin in the front, but completely ridiculous looking... Needless to say I panicked as soon as I saw it and scheduled an appointment with my favourite hair stylist. I wasn't sure, though, what kind of cut would look good, or even if a pixie cut would work. After reading your blog, though, I'm much assured! Thanks again! -Sf-

Great article. My boyfriend really wants me to get a pixie cut. He thinks they are very sexy. I have never gone that short, but think I might try it after reading this article. I'm a pony tail girl too!

Hey great piece this one..I've been dyin to get one too but like so many been hesitant..My hair grows awfully fast is fine n straight...The rate at which it grows is frankly keepin me away from a pixie..Any ideas on how to tide over that one?

I'm planning on joining the Navy soon, and I need to get my hair cut above collar level, so I've been toying around with the idea of a pixie. I've always wanted to, but have been a bit afraid because I don't have the most delicate features. But...I think this post has given me the courage to just go for it. If I hate it, I will. But only until my hair grows out a bit. I think I'll live. =]

I'm 17 and have actually in the last week or so decided on getting a pixie cut. I've ben really worried about how it will look because I have a full face. To be honest, this article has inspired me to just do it. If it comes out terrible, oh well, it's only hair. I think I'm gonna go for the Selma Blair pixie. Wish me Luck!!

I too have changed my hair many, many times in the course of my 28years on earth. I cut my hair super short in high school (ala Gwyneth Paltrow) and loved it. Haven't had the guts to do it since though. Now I'm a mom of two and have ZERO time to blow-dry and flat-iron my thick, long hair everyday. Your article has inspired me to adopt the "just do it" attitude and go super short again. Thanks!

Very well said! I've decided to get a pixie cut tomorrow morning. There are a lot of reasons I want a pixie. First of all, I've got a great bone structure and I model. Tyra Banks stresses that "boy cuts" flatter a beautiful bone structure. You look great with a pixie, by the way. I have an oval shaped face (which I've heard is great for pixies). I've pulled off a lot of looks, including a mohawk, haha! I want to layer my pixie ( like the girl in your pictures) so that it shows off my high cheek bones (thanks to my native american grandma). Anyways, I love your blog. If you like, you can check out my pictures on myspace and let me know if you think a pixie would look good on me. By the time you see this, though, I'll probably already have cut it. I'm not worried about it, because (like you said) the face and the confidence wears the pixie, not the other way around. Sorry if that was nonsense.

I've gone back and forth between long and short hair for many years and I'm planning on getting a pixie cut in the next couple of weeks.

I will also be, based on my previous experience, getting my eyebrows waxed as well. Without having hair to hide behind, I've found that it helps a LOT to have well manicured brows. You don't need to get a really thin brow - just clean them up a little and define the arch you have. It, along with the new, shorter hair, will make your eyes really stand out.

I have had short pixie hair styles for years now, but my hairdresser, who used to do a fantastic job now doesn't, and I can't find someone to do it the same. It is very annoying.
I am a heavy girl, but the pixie look apparantly suits me to a tee, I thought my ears may be a little big, but it is cut around them and therefore hides them.
Fingers crossed i can find another hairdresser in Townsville, Qld, Australia that can do a good job. I hate longer hair, hehehe.

For those of you who aren't ponytail girls (I'm not really a ponytail girl myself), get a pixie with bangs in the front. I cut my hair into a pixie two years ago, and a month ago, I cut my grown out hair back short, but I decided to opt for bangs, and it's so flattering! You don't feel so exposed, and if you need to grow your hair out, then you just have to worry about the back of your hair :)

I just buzzed my head for the first time ever, think about 1 inch all over. It looks fabulous and I have extremely curly hair. To quote my old hairdresser: "The kinkiest hair I've ever seen on a white girl". It just adds texture and volume to the cut and makes it interesting. So if you're a curly girl, go for it.

I have always had long hair. I felt that long hair was sexy and feminine and that short hair (at least on me) would be too "boyish". I never considered myself a "pony tail girl", either. However, on a spurt of the moment decision one day (about 4 months ago), I cut all my hair off, right to my ears! I gave myself a nice pixie cut, it looks great and so many people ask me where I got it cut, and how it flatters me so much more than my long hair... great article, thanks!

I LOVE your honest, and insighful views on getting a pixie cut!!! I just turned 30 (I have 3 kids too--and DID NOT want to be doomed to losing my creative flair by getting a horrific "mom-do")...and as of today I got probably the BEST pixie cut I've ever gotten!!! I feel FREE again! I haven't let my hair get longer than a simple bob for several years, and I got my first pixie cut when I was 18....and a couple of times since then, but I always get caught in the dreaded growing-out phase (you described that PERFECTLY by the way!)...but who cares...I LOVE my new 'do!!! I'm so glad I went back to it...it brings out such a sense of renewed self-confidence...like I said, I'm a mom of 3, I just had my 30th birthday, people already tell me I "look like I'm 19" all the time...but I LOVE how chopping my hair off makes me feel so liberated and ultra-feminine...it gives you nowhere to hide, so to speak, and I LOVE that! Plus, its so different from most of the other "moms" I encounter (I'm younger than most of them that I deal with...my oldest child is 10 years, and then I have a 2 year old and a 10 month old)...but I like feeling like the confident, "fresh" mom...its amazing to me how many other women compliment me on my lack of hair, but almost all of them say something like "I'd NEVER have the courage to do that--but it looks so good on you!"....why don't they just give it a try?!?!? My husband loves it...he says it really brings out my cheekbones and eyes, and I actually look MORE like a beautiful woman the less hair I have! How cool is that?! Thanks for your post...I was toying with the idea of going SUPER short again, so I did some internet surfing to get myself more in that frame of mind, and your post was most inspiring...I seriously went right out and snagged my favorite stylist and came home feeling like a new woman! You ROCK!!!

This article is freakishly helpful. I'm not kidding. Instead of persuading me to run and get my hair sheared right away, it convinced me that to get a haircut you like, you MUST understand what work it takes, and how to un-do it, and all that stuff. That doesn't mean I'm still not gonna run and get my hair sheared right away, though.

I just got a pixie, and it looks really good on me, but some kids at school say I looked better with long hair, and that I look like a boy. I guess maybe that's because I'm only in 8th grade, and the common sense of style is lacking. I am happy with my cut, though, and about 80% of people say they like my hair.

ive always had super long hair, but after cutting it to sholder length when i was then i cant grow it longer than mid chest. ive been considering getting long extensions put in to add feminity becuase i have an stong face, high cheek bones, defined nose, large eyes, angular jaw, brows ala rosario dawson, ect. but recently the idea of a pixie cut came to mind. ive always thought they were daring but not as femine as longer hair, now ive reconsidered. would a longer pixie (cheek length with angled fringe) work with stong faces like mine or are they more for the typicaly delicate "pixie" girls?

Hey! :D
I really want a pixie cut but I have a straight parting down the middle of my head. What will happen when I get it cut? (It can change partings a little if I wet it and blowdry it...)
